In the wake of humanity's initial forays into interstellar travel, the first skirmishes of what will be remembered as the Alliance Wars have begun. Amidst the turmoil following Chairwoman Crull's ousting, Terran Fleet Command finds itself on the brink of disarray, with Earth's defense resting heavily on Admiral Kevin Patterson's shoulders. Facing a scarcity of combat-ready ships, Patterson decides to split his forces, engaging the Resistance task force at two distinct locations. Captain Tom Prescott and the crew of the destroyer Theseus initially succeed in battle, only to encounter an unexpected, heavily armed warship. As the Resistance task force nears Earth, a new ally cautions of the impending doom if the attack succeeds. Meanwhile, the mysterious Guardian observes, its intentions as a protector or bystander unclear. Despite the grim situation, hope persists as a friend of humanity embraces their fate.
