What is this beauty??! Is it a crystal-clear Emerald? A huge perfect Tsavorite? An emerald-green Tourmaline?? Nope! This stunning gemstone is the Chromium-rich green version of Diopside, hence the name Chrome Diopside. Since it is found almost exclusively in the frozen regions of Siberia, it is sometimes referred to as the Imperial Diopside or even the "Russian Emerald". But that's just confusing and frankly, misleading.
Compared to Tsavorite or Emerald or even Tourmaline, however, Chrome Diopside is much softer, ranking a 5-6 on the Moh's scale, and meaning it is better for earrings or pendants rather than rings, since your hands can get pretty banged up unless you are very careful (which I am not!) It is also MUCH more affordable than all of its lookalikes.
This stone is nothing short of magnificent! It is a pear-shaped gem, measuring 10.14 x 7.99 x 4.62 mm and weighing 2.3 carats.
